Giveaway Day - Quilting Kit

Happy Giveaway Day!

For Sew, Mama, Sew's Giveaway Day, I put together this little Quilting Kit:

It includes:

*Scraps from about 50 different fabrics

*2 spools of 100% cotton hand quilting thread

*A measuring tape

*10 quilting needles (Size 10 betweens) in a wooden holder

*An off-hand thimble

*A 12 inch by 14 inch project bag I made with a thrifted sheet, using Betz White's Tutorial

Here's a better view of some of the fabrics. These were culled from my frightfully large scrap box. The scraps range in size from 4 inches by 4 inches up to 10 inches by 26 inches. Most are 100% cotton and most have not been pre-washed.

So how can you win this cute bag of goodies? By leaving a comment answering the following question:

"What was your favorite Halloween costume?"
(It can be a costume you wore or one you made for someone else)
Edited to add: I apologize to international folks for forgetting Halloween is not a world-wide holiday. Just leave a comment about any costume you've enjoyed!)

And what does this have to do with quilting? Sorting my scraps reminded me of a costume my very crafty mom made for me: The Patchwork Girl of Oz. Much to my dismay, none of my classmates knew of this obscure character and assumed I was Raggedy Ann. My mom, being the cool mom that she is, probably foresaw this possibility but still indulged me and put in a lot of effort to make me a costume no one would recognize. Thanks, Mommy!

On June 1, I will select a winner at random from all the comments telling me about a costume left between May 27 and May31. I will also pay for shipping charges (either domestic or international).

Thanks very much to Sew, Mama, Sew for organizing this and be sure to go check out all the other participants here and here!

My favorite halloween costume was one my dad made for my brother and I when we were young. He made each of us a hot air balloon. He took a big basket and added a balsa wood frame. Teh frame was then covered in sheer pink fabric for me, black garbage bags (with skull and crossbones) for bro. I was then the princess being chased by the pirate in our hot air balloons. We even won a prize.

What a wonderful stash of fabric scraps! I'd love to be able to play with them!

My favourite costume was when I dressed up with 2 friends as the 3 Blind Mice. The best part was that she made the costumes too!

Count me in - enjoy your giveaway!

This is an easy one. My mom made me the best dog costume when I was, um, 9 or 10. It was a full suit, hood, shoe covers, etc. I loved it!
Thanks for hosting such a terrific giveaway!

Ohhh, drooling over this fabric!

My favorite costume: Last year, I made my son a Bamm-Bamm costume. It was just a little shift made from animal-print fabric with bone buttons on it. And he carried a club. Cute and appropriate!

When I was a child Halloween wasn't popular or even known in Germany, but we had Karneval or Fasching, where we wore costumes. My favorite was a cowgirl costume my mother made out of old jeans from my brothers. A neighbor loaned us a cowboy hat and a plastic revolver. I felt great in the costume and thought it was so unique. But when I went to the party every child was dressed up either as a cowboy or as a red indian (it was the 70s and everyone was watching reruns of Bonanza). I remember feeling so frustrated... Still, whenever I see the photos I have to admit that it WAS a great costume and I looked so cute.

My favorite Halloween costume was a ballerina one when I was a kid. I loved dressing up! If only I wasn't too old for it now. :) Thanks!

In 8th grade, my bff and I went out for Halloween. I wore my grandpa's old suit and had cork-ash on my face as a bum. My bff, though, was a "girl with a sheet over her head." Everyone thought she was a ghost, but nope. She was a "girl with a sheet over her head." It still makes me laugh.

When I was about 11 my brother and I dressed as dead bride and groom. Kind of like on BeetleJuice. I wore a wedding dress and everything. Thanks for the chance.

I've been making costumes since my kids were small. But sewing them for my grandchildren has to be creative. My favorite is the black widow spider I made this past Halloween for my grandaugher. I have it on my blog.

My favorite Halloween costume was from 5th grade. I dressed up as an oil painting! I wore an old fashioned dress that my mom had, did my hair in a bun, and wore an elaborate museum-style frame around my shoulders.

My favorite costume was a regency "pride and prejudice" dress. I lOVE anything Jane Austen!

When I was in third grade I went as a garbage can! My mom helped me make the "can" out of cardboard we covered with aluminum foil, and I wore an actual aluminum lid as a hat! I had banana peels hanging out and everything. Sweet giveaway!

My favorite costume was a skeleton that my mom made for me. I was embarrased to wear it when I was little, but looking back I realize how much time my mom put into making it and what a great job she did.

I think one of my fav costumes had to be when I dressed as a bunch of grapes in middle school. It caused a lot of commotion as my cluster was composed of purple balloons... which a lot of kids (especially the boys) chased me at recess to try and pop me... it was fun!

My favorite Halloween costume was a ladybug made by my mother. I was soooo excited about it and was hoping to win a prize. I was distraught as everyone won a prize, but me. I was so sad. Great memories of Halloween as my mom always made my costumes. What a beautiful collection of fabric. Thanks!

My favorite was a costume I made for my kids. They had on a clear garbage bag filled with balloons. I wrote on the bag "jelly beans". The only problem was when they were walking along the balloons were coming out the leg holes. my daughter was beside herself with embarrassment.

My homemade tinkerbell costume. Green leotard, tights, and wings made form hangers. My brother was captain hook.

My mom made me (with her own two hands!) an I Dream Of Jeanie costume when I was like 6 or 7. I loved it and wore my pink jellies with it. I was super cold though with all that sheer fabric and my tummy exposed. :)

When I was a kid my mom had a lady at work make me a bird costume, (my mom doesn't sew). It was mainly blue, covered in felt feathers in yellow and orange, with little foot covers and a hat with a beak on it... I still have it... probably needs a bit of work, but it is a great costume!! I think it was all felt...

ChrisC said...

Oh, wow, what a great giveaway. My favorite halloween costume was in college when I was a glitter fairy. I had a great glittery 70s dress I found at a thrift store, wings, a wand and lots and lots of glitter to dump on people. Okay, so the costume wasn't so great -- that's just the most fun I remember having on halloween :-)

my favorite costume, never used but I wish I had, was a caterpillar costume for a baby. I wish I had used it for my son, it's adorable

This past year was my favorite costume that I have made. My fiance has a Link costume (from Legend of Zelda) that he made a couple years ago and was going to wear it again this year, so I decided that I would make a Zelda costume to go along with his. It was awesome. I took that whole day before halloween to make it out of old white bed sheets for the skirt and felt for the front design thing. Then I had a purple shirt that I never wore and altered that for my shirt. It was really incredible. And made a tiara out of foam paper, hot glue and gold paint.

Katie said...

Wow!!! Amazing giveaway! My favourite halloween costume was when my friend's child wanted to be a Mummy. They learned that cute definitely wins over creepy when it comes to 2 year olds!

My mom made my favorite costume, too. She sewed rows and rows of swishy fringe to a straight shift of hers--all white-- and let me wear high heels and even false eyelashes to be a 20s "flapper." Unfortunately, Halloween was freezing, so to go trick or treating I had to cover it all up with a bright yellow parka! But it was still cool! I like lots of things on your blog, by the way.

My favourite Halloween costume was when I dressed up as cheerleader when I was 10. I had borrowed my aunts baton that she used when she was a cheerleader for a football team in Canada. I went around imaging the baton was on fire like she use to do (I think I hit a few people accidentally in the head twirling it around :p) Made up my face and died my hair the teams colours (my hair was yellow for days lol)

I can remember my mom making me a giant Hershey bar costume. That was awesome!

This past year was my little girl's first Halloween. She was a year old. I made her a rather adorable purple and pink sparkly tutu. Then, I bought a crown and light-up wand. She was going to be a fairy princess. She liked the wand immediately and played with it until it broke. Ok. I guess she was just going to be a princess. Then, right before we were going to leave the house I got the crown out and tried to assemble it. It broke. Dangit! Now, what was she going to be? A tutu girl? I fished out some ballerina pajamas and put them on her. Then, I tried to put on the tutu. She wouldn't have ANY of that. She pitched such a huge fit that we abandoned Halloween festivities and just went out to eat. She was still wearing her ballerina pajamas....

Maybe next year...!

my favorite childhood costume was a witch. I'm sure it was store bought because my mom was not at all crafty, but I loved it. My grandmother always wanted me to be an angel. : )

My favorite halloween costume was a dinosaur when I was little - I still have a soft spot for dinosaurs.

My favorite halloween costume was when I was in elementary school and was a washing machine. I wore a box painted white and had socks, etc. coming out the top:)

My favorite costume was either the year I turned my 20-month old into a scarecrow with a plaid red shirt, ragged hat and patched overall OR the year he was an adorable Dracula with white shirt, velvet vest and cape and black pants. I got fangs for him and spiked his hair. Great memories!

My favorite costume was a cat. I think I was a cat about 4 times as a kid.

This is such a cool give-away you've got!
I'm Dutch, and halloween isn't in too much here yet. But when my oldest was little (about three), he wanted to be ghost, so I took an old sheet, cut some holes in it and threaded it here and there so it would stay in place, and he loved it!
So who am I it's not really fancy?

My favorite costume that I ever dressed up in was Pippi Longstocking. It was so much fun. I had wire stuck through my braids so they stuck off the side of my head. It was great.

I love this giveaway. I have just started quilting with my soon-to-be mother-in-law and I love it!!

My favorite costume is when my husband go as "Nerds at the Prom". We can get away with it, because we really are nerds. LOL We go to the thrift store and I get the cheesiest bridemaids gown. I fix my hair in pig tails or braids. Do my make up over the top. I wear an old pair of coke bottle glasses which were my aunts. My husband gets polyester and an old cowboy shirt to wear, with a pocket protector. He has toilet paper coming out of his pants, and he wears a sign on his back which reads, "kick me".

It's hysterical and we always bring the party down. It's a good, cheap, fun costume.

Thank you for your wonderful giveaway. I truly hope I win. I'm a sucker for scraps and could use everything else your giving.

Kindest regards,
take care.

My favorite was a purchased Wonder Woman, I loved the plastic mask that made my upper lip sweat (gross).

Ooh...what a great collection of goodies! Thank you! My favorite costume was the tooth fairy--my mom found me a great green velvet dress in a thrift store and appliqued big white felt teeth all over it.

This would be so awesome to win, as I'm just trying to learn how to quilt! My favorite costume was one year when I was little (my mom always made my costumes) and I went as a green crayola crayon. The whole thing was made out of itchy green felt, but it was awesome!

Awesome! I loved my angel costume in high school mom and I made it using an old graduation gown and tons of ribbon and glitter ... I won the costume contest!

My favorite one had to be the year I dressed up as a box of crayons; it was a simple pattern that my mom sewed up, but it was so much fun to wear! (it was a printed fabric pattern that included the whole box, and it had a "crayon point" hat that topped it all off!) I also enjoyed being the Statue of Liberty, but must admit that my arm was tired shortly after starting to trick or treat. :) Thanks for the chance to enter your give-away!

Halloween is one of my most absolute cherished childhood memories! Each year my mom found the time to make our costumes - my favorite: Little Red Riding Hood - she was Grandma - any my brother was the big bad wolf (although he thought he looked like a fuzzy cat)!! Thank you for the giveaway!

In grade 7 my mom made me the most fabulous unicorn costume. She worked at a fabric store and got a ton of purple stain for cheap because it was flawed. She cut around the problems and made this elaborate costume, complete with sparkly purple tulle for the headdress. I won a bunch of contests. To this day, I wish I could sew as well as she can.

Probably my favorite costume was a friend dressed up as a human pinata for a friends fiesta themed wedding reception. He let the kids chase him around and hit him with styrofoam bats. Until the candy he had hidden in his shirt fell out. I was very funny to watch.

My mom made me a costume when I was about 9 and I was one of those girls rocking the 50's poodle skirts. It was pink and soft and had the black poodle with the red sequin leash looping across the skirt. My little sister had an identical one so we were too cute with our blue scarves, white blouses, and pink twirly skirts. My friends all did the same thing but theirs came from the store while mine was handmade by my mom, so that made it even better.

OH MY GOSH! I am totally drooling at all that gorgeous fabric.

I think my favorite Halloween costume was one we made for one of my boys. We took dryer vent hose we painted silver to cover his arms & legs. Then cut lots of styrofoam into shaped pieces to fit over his body to make him a robot. His head was also covered with styrofoam as well which all was painted silver too. Then we created a control panel and attached it to the front of his chest area and installed colored film over holes we cut into that and placed battery powered Christmas lights behind those so it would all light up and blink. It was just awesome and he won first prize at a local mall we took him too that night.

I too had a costume no one recognized. I was determined one year to be "crystal barbie". Of course, there wasnt any pattern for such a thing. So, mom took my barbie to her machine and started deconstructing it (without actually taking apart the barbie dress - I would have been beside myself). She came up with a dress so perfect that I could have been sold in stores. But, no one knew who I was. I finally had to carry the barbie with me for people to figure it out.

My favorite costume ever, was one I made for my daughter when she was 1 1/2 years old. It was a cow costume. She looked so cute, but I was also pleased because it was the first thing I sewed on my own. It said it was an easy pattern that would only take 2 hours, it took me over 8 hours to complete. Not perfect, but done with love.

Thanks,

I loved sewing costumes for my kids and now that they're grown and gone I've started making my own. I made one that was a great pirate lass. I mixed up several patterns and improvised here and there and got just what I wanted. Making it was more fun than the party I went to :)

I am from Australia and have never participated in Halloween and you will just think I am a very sad person if I say that I have never ever dressed up in a costume!!! Hmmm thinking about it now I am sad :( If it is any consolation though, as a kid I used to pretend I was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle all the time, Michaelangelo to be exact :D I had 3 other sisters growing up and we were all Turtles, then when my brother came along he had to be Splinter LOL He wanted to be a bad guy :D But no, no costumes, just our imaginations :D

Ooo, Halloween! I usually end up dressed as a pirate, just because my pirate costume is my favorite. I've been working on it for nine or so years -since I first started working at the local Renaissance Festival when I was 14- and it's gotten quite impressive!

I'm hoping to start on a massive monster costume soon, however, a la www.missmonster.com 's costumes, or some of the bigger stilt monsters I've seen.

HUm, I can't pick between 2. The first was easy, I wsa a sunflower when I was about 7. My mom dressed me in a green turtlneck and black leggings and then created this faboulous sunflower hat with wire, styrafoam and yellow tissue paper, to wear on my head. It was easy and cute.
Then one year I was Pipi Longstockings. That was easy, some worn clothes with patches sewn on, hair put up in braids on each side; with wires in them to make them stand out. Pencil eyeliner to create some great freckles and viola!
Thanks for the opportunity!

My favorite costume was my sisters. She went as the headless horseman. She put a box over her head and wore one of my dad's large shirts (so it looked like she had no head). Then she carried around a pumpkin carved as a head in her hand and then rode our real pony around the neighborhood trick or treating. It was pretty funny. I'll have to find a picture if you want to see it :)
