For Sew, Mama, Sew's Giveaway Day, I put together this little Quilting Kit:
It includes:
*Scraps from about 50 different fabrics
*2 spools of 100% cotton hand quilting thread
*A measuring tape
*10 quilting needles (Size 10 betweens) in a wooden holder
*An off-hand thimble
*A 12 inch by 14 inch project bag I made with a thrifted sheet, using Betz White's Tutorial
Here's a better view of some of the fabrics. These were culled from my frightfully large scrap box. The scraps range in size from 4 inches by 4 inches up to 10 inches by 26 inches. Most are 100% cotton and most have not been pre-washed.
So how can you win this cute bag of goodies? By leaving a comment answering the following question:
"What was your favorite Halloween costume?"
(It can be a costume you wore or one you made for someone else)
Edited to add: I apologize to international folks for forgetting Halloween is not a world-wide holiday. Just leave a comment about any costume you've enjoyed!)
(It can be a costume you wore or one you made for someone else)
Edited to add: I apologize to international folks for forgetting Halloween is not a world-wide holiday. Just leave a comment about any costume you've enjoyed!)
And what does this have to do with quilting? Sorting my scraps reminded me of a costume my very crafty mom made for me: The Patchwork Girl of Oz. Much to my dismay, none of my classmates knew of this obscure character and assumed I was Raggedy Ann. My mom, being the cool mom that she is, probably foresaw this possibility but still indulged me and put in a lot of effort to make me a costume no one would recognize. Thanks, Mommy!
On June 1, I will select a winner at random from all the comments telling me about a costume left between May 27 and May31. I will also pay for shipping charges (either domestic or international).
Thanks very much to Sew, Mama, Sew for organizing this and be sure to go check out all the other participants here and here!
My favourite Halloween costume was when my husband dressed out little boy as a spook. Our DS didn't want to wear the clothes, but he had his hair painted green and face paint on - he looked so cute!
ReplyDeleteThe first comment never wins, but oh well! :) My favorite halloween costume was one my mom made for me as a kid. My twin sister and I (probably about 5 at the time) went as crayons! I was red, she was yellow, and we has felt costumes with the 'Crayola' logo and pointy hats. As a finishing touch, mom painted our faces to match. Pictures of us in those costumes always make me feel warm and fuzzy.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful giveaway. I can't believe I am first to enter!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite costume was a (non-crafty) skeleton costume. It was very "high-tech" with a plastic mask that had flashing red eyes ... very state-of-the-art for the 70's!
Anyhow, I would love to be entered to win your fabulous quilting kit.
My favorite Halloween costume was the forest fairy one I made in grad school. It was the most ambitious crafting project I'd undertaken to date, with a dress of satin, an overdress of sheer gauze, appliqued leaves, and wings made from old nylons and wire coathangers.
ReplyDeleteOne year, I was a toothbrush for Halloween. We attatched a posterboard brushead to a headband.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful fabric and fun question... My favorite Halloween costume is really a Halloween memory - my mother, the most uncrafty person to give birth to knitters and sewers and quilters, mustered her all to help me create a Dollar-bill costume (complete with head cut out) to match the money-inspired theme I had going with my friends. I was 11 and it was one of the last times I celebrated as a child. It was so great and wonderful to see her step out of her comfort zone... great mom, great memory.
ReplyDeletewow am I the first? I was just brousing before the baby woke up, and I am glad not only do you have a great giveaway but you reminded me of fond memories as a kid.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up we were very poor so hallolween costumes were almost always not something we got. Until I learned how to sew, by the time my little brothers were old enough to trick or treat their older sister could whip them up the coolest handmade batman or ninja turtle costume.
Needless to say now that we are older, I am still the coolest sister. LOL
What a lovely giveaway. The fabric scaps look GREAT! As for Halloween, my senior year of high school my best friend and I made ourselves into Ariel and Caliban from The Tempest (we were reading it in school). Most of the fun was in the costume-making. It was the first time I made pants -- very simple, no pattern, didn't last long. Ha.
ReplyDeleteI'm doing a giveaway as well and hosting a fabric swap. Come and check it out :)
my favorite costume was as crest toothpaste. my mom made me the costume. i had a red ribbed fabric mask and a big sheet as the tube. she used crayons to draw the label.
ReplyDeletethat kit looks amazing.
ReplyDeletemy favorite costume was the fairy princess dress my mother made me out of white flannel & silver trim. I was able to wear it year round as a nightgown. It multi-tasked!
Thank you so much for the generous batch of goodies!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite had to be my daughter's from last year. It was too cold to wear her fairy costume so she wore it with her bear coat...complete with ears. We called her the bear fairy.
the6oclockstitch(at)gmail(dot)com
What a great stash! Well, one year in high school I dressed up as Dorothy, my boyfriend as the scarecrow, and my best friend as Glenda. Fun times!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite costume was me as a beauty queen for my college Geography club party. Long gold satin gown complete with a sash and lots of eye makeup.
ReplyDeleteThat is an awesome kit.
Raggady Annie. I was five. I loved that outfit!
ReplyDeleteAs a kid, I was a big fan of Cyndi Lauper. And so, for a few years in a row, I went as a punk rocker. I wore an oversized pink t-shirt, belted, over leggings with black 'granny' boots, and had my hair sprayed with that awful pink/sparkly stuff. With my coke-bottle glasses, I may have been the nerdiest punk rocker ever, but I was a pretty cool five year old, I think.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite halloween costume was a poodle skirt that I made myself when I was 11 or 12. Or perhaps it was my aunt's old homecoming dress. That was fun to wear!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite halloween costume was the year I dressed up as little red riding hood. Indiana is quite cold by the end of October, so I made my costume by hand, and used heavy red wool felt to make a big red cape. It looked great, and I was warm all night.
ReplyDeleteYour scrap pile looks awesome! Thanks for the giveaway :)
One of my favorite costumes was when my brother dressed up as one of my dad's popsicles. (My dad makes popsicles for a living)
ReplyDeleteFun giveaway!
I loved being a mummy back when I was in middle school. We wrapped a bunch of torn sheets all around me. It was funny because at the same time I was on crutches because I broke my ankle in 4 places...ouch!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great giveaway!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a baby my mom dressed me as a bumblebee by sewing black stripes to a fuzzy yellow sleeper.
GREAT question! One year I made a Hershey's kiss costume from oaktag, staples, masking tape and tinfoil! Even with the streamer coming out of the top saying "Hershey's Kiss" people thought I was "The Big Fig Newton"! I'm showing my age, if anyone remembers that commercial ;-)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume that I wore was one my mom made me. I was a Tootsie Roll. It was so cute! I made a lion costume for my children (both have worn it so far) and it is my favorite made by me costume! Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI once went as (and I'm showing my age here!!) 'Alexis feeling the pinch' - from Dynasty, I was all dolled up in stylish dress, hat, make up, and a tupperware beaker i/o a champagne flute - I think it was my mother's idea !!! love the giveaway goodies - fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteMy brother, who is quite tall, went as the Jolly Green Giant one year. That's my favorite costume of all time.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite costume was being a freudian slip :) A slip with fruedian phrases all over it was the easiest costume to make (nost suitable for kids though, haha)
ReplyDeleteWe don't really do Halloween in the way that the States do but last year i made my boy a spider costume for his dance recital. A long-sleeved tunic made from black muslin it had two sets of arms that were threaded up to the real arms so that everything moved together. Add to that black tights and my little blond-haired spider did stole the show :-)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely the best question so far! My mum used to make us the BEST halloween costumes when we were little, and one year I wanted to be a ballerina, and I had the BEST tulle tutu and pink leotard and I got to wear BLUSH (which from the pictures, I definitely applied myself), and my favourite part was that my dad had a picture of me in that costume on his desk at work until he retired last fall, liek 20 years later.
ReplyDeleteWe never really did the halloween dressing up thing as it was not as big in the UK at that time. But my favourite costume that I have made was my daughter's giraffe outfit!
ReplyDeleteI'm coming out of lurk for this because I love the question! XX years ago, I was a bag of jelly beans. I took a clear plastic dry-cleaner bag, cut leg holes, gathered it gently around my shoulders, and filled it with those little balloons you use for water bombs. I wish I had a picture. That was a fun year!
ReplyDeleteThe favorite costume I've made was for my daughter and it was the anime character Sailor Moon. She loved it and wore it to death.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite costume I've ever seen was a girl who made a costume for herself of the Empire State Building, and she had her toddler dressed like King Kong. It was flippin awesome! I am amandafetters at gmail dot com. :D
ReplyDeleteMy favorite costumes I made for my daughters were their Jasmine costumes, complete with big jewels...too bad it turned out to be the coldest Halloween of their childhood andf they had to wear coats! Being the procrastinator, I finished the last one 5 minutes before they were to go out!
ReplyDeleteOh wow. That is an amazing prize. By far, my favourite costume has to be the one my mom made for me when I was in grade 3 - I was a skunk. I wore black, painted my face, and had ears... and a giant tail that we made from a tube of black fabric and a frame of (unbent) metal curtains, stuffed with newspaper, with a white stripe up the top. It was SO COOL.
ReplyDeleteoh goodness... i would love to win this giveaway!
ReplyDeletemy favorite costume was my daughter's a few years ago. We made her into a laundry basket. She looked soooo cute!
my favourite halloween costume was probably the year i dressed up as cher. i had a giant curly black wig, i mean giant. and i wore stretch pants and this giant glittery silver/black shirt of my mom's. i was 10. it was awesome.
ReplyDeleteOne year, I decided to go as a Pokemon card for Halloween. I made a huge felt square and decorated it with applique and permanent markers. The best part? We used tin foil for the picture part so it was holographic!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume was Betty Boop.
ReplyDeleteI found the most perfect red dress at the thrift shop months earlier. It was a soft flowing jersey, but had a wonderful spin and plunging neckline.
I even wore green contact lenses to complete the look.
Ahhh, I wish that fabulous dress still fit ...
heidig@gmail.com
Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year. I always have a princess to dress up! Someday maybe she'll want to be something else!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite Halloween costume as a kid was the Pink Power Ranger. My mom sewed white diamond patches onto a pink shirt, and she made white boots covers, with pink diamond patches to slide over my cowboy boots. It looks so good but everyone thought I was just a biker. Figures.
ReplyDeletemy favorite halloween costume is one of my son's. my 6 yr old son requested last year to be jim cantore from the weather channel. my father is a meteorologist and my son loves to talk weather with him and watch the weather channel. then we went through hurricane ike in september and he knew big jim was close to our home on the beach.
ReplyDeletehis costume was a rainsuit, rubber boots, glasses that i popped the lenses out of and was complete with a homemade stop sign because "all weather guys hang on a pole in the wind mom!"
Great giveaway and I love all your wallets in your shop. That's what I like about these, you can find some really neat blogs.
ReplyDeleteOK, favorite costume, at the time I hated it. Mom made me a cave girl with a deer hide around me and went in the backyard and got a round dog bone, tied it around my neck. Anyway, now looking back, Mom was always so creative. Won best costume.
Keep Stitchen'
Bonnie
My favorite costume was an adorable little mouse costume my mom made for my older sister. I wore it several times in a row once I was able to fit in it.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite halloween costume: thats a tough one. A few years ago I made a Jem costume. It had a psychadellic pink dress and a belt with the logo and pink hair. Jem was like rock star barbie on steroids - I watched it on tv as a kid.
ReplyDeleteThere have been soooooo many. The neighborhood i raised my kids in has a huge Hallowe'en night party so I crafted patterns for them all the way through their high school years!
ReplyDeleteThe first to come to mind was the Headless Villian of Crest Drive! My son was 8 or 9 and we put a black adult size raincoat over a humanish shaped box.
It was buttoned up with a red (for blood) scarf twisted around a white scarf at the neck. The left arm was tucked in to the pocket and carried my son's head. His head was cleverly poking out of a hole in the side of the box!
Folks were quite taken aback that night!
My favorite costume was my son's "Grease" costume. He was almost 2 and it was really the only thing I could get him to wear. Oddly enough he really, really loved the mousse I put in his hair to hold it up and even requested it after. Luckily it was only a phase (for now at least).
ReplyDeleteOne year I dress my 3 little boys up like the 3 little pigs. I think they were the best costumes I ever made.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the offer!
As a kid I wore the same Scoobie Doo costume for years. My older sister wore it for years before me. At that time it never occurred to me to fashion my own.
ReplyDeleteMany moons later when my eldest was little I made my all time favorite costume 'Peas in a Pod'. It has been a popular infant pattern for years and is just great for the non-walking baby.
In the years following it there was a carrot and a dinosaur. I missed those as my son became a Ninja, then Screech....those were the days
My sister-in-law is the queen of Halloween costumes. No sense in my making any if the kids all want to go through her costume closet for the big day. One year my son picked out a little mouse costume. It was adorable, but since it rained the day of Halloween, we always referred to that costume as the drowned rat costume.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite costume was when I was about 8 and I got to be a flapper. My mom "made" the costume by using most of her own things and fitting them to me. I would love to win this giveaway and try my first quilt! katievarela AT att DOT net
ReplyDeleteI remember my dalmatian dog costume vividly, I think I wore it once and then it went to my sister later
ReplyDeleteI was Punky Brewster one year! You can see it here:
ReplyDeletehttp://corgipants.blogspot.com/2008/10/halloween-blog-party.html
I loved it so much, I recreated it last year for Halloween. My how I have grown!
http://corgipants.blogspot.com/2008/10/last-of-halloween-pictures.html
My mom made me a killer Patty-O-Green costume when I was in kindergarden. I had to be Patty-O-Green because my big sis was Rainbow Brite, of course. She made the cool boots and everything!
ReplyDeleteKeeping my fingers crossed that I'll be the lucky winner...
Thanks for such a lovely and generous giveaway!

When my only son was six years old, I made him the coolest ET costume. ET was very big at the time and this costume was very similar to the real ET. My son was thrilled and has kept it and he is now 31 years old!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite costume was strawberry shortcake. I was in love as a little girl. As a side note, if I win, it would be ok with me if you wanted to split up the prize. I am mostly interested in the fabric. I want to beef up my stash a bit so that I can get more creative. Of course, I would love the other things as well!
ReplyDeleteMy mom made a tree costume that my brother, sister and I all wore, and now two of my nephews have worn it! I'm hoping my daughter will wear it this year, but we'll have to put a sparkly fairy in the branches or something to get her into it! :D
ReplyDeleteMy DD piglet costume was darling
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume was when my friend Zach dressed up as the red dot thing that shows up on Google Maps! He then proceeded to go around to different locations in New York City to pose at different locations.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun giveaway!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume was the one we got for my daughter last year. Not handmade, but awesome. She was about 15 months old at the time, and is quite a wiley little thing. So we got her a Ninja costume. It was hilarious, and I could care less if people thought she was a boy. :-)
Liz @ teeny tiny quilts
My favourite Halloween costume was a gypsy one I wore in elementary school. I was adorned with as many scarves as I could find, with long earrings and necklaces. So pretty! ;)
ReplyDeleteMy mommie made all of our costumes and I believe that is where I caught the sewing bug. When I was 8 or so she made me a penguin costume that I loved. It had a beaked hood and everything! Its my favorite bc to this day I still have an everlasting love for all things penguin! Great giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI'm hosting a giveaway too!
http://3oclockwalk.blogspot.com
My favorite childhood costume was a gypsy! I wore my mom's long flowing skirts, a shawl, big hoop earrings, a scarf around my head and as many rings and bracelets as my little hands and wrists could bear. I jinbled when I walked and felt very mysterious. Plus my Mom let me where eyeliner so that was a bonus : )
ReplyDeleteStop by secret cake for a vintage giveaway!
http://secretcake.blogspot.com/2009/05/may-giveaway-day-is-coming.html
Cheers!
My favorite costume was one I don't even remember wearing. My mom made it for me. I was two, it was a chipmunk and it was wonderful.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite was one handmade by my mom: a tiger/leopard costume. I think my sister had to wear it one Halloween as well!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite halloween costume is the one I made for my daughter last year:

I was a clown on roller-skates one year. With scraped knees!
ReplyDeleteOk, so first things first...I love your site! I've bookmarked it and plan to visit often as I JUST started quilting and am self taught through books and blogs! (so far I've completed 2 crib quilts and 2 doll quilts) Anyway...costumes....
ReplyDeleteThis one doesn't have much to do with quilting, but my mom made several costumes for my sister and myself growing up. But my favorite was actually ones she made for herself and my dad. I took them over in high school and used them for every Halloween party from about 16 years old all the way through college. They were home made Bumble Bee costumes. They were so cute! Just huge gold and black strips of corduroy fabric with neck hole and arm holes. The bottom was just hemmed so they hung like a big sack. I wore a black turtle neck and black tights with them. The wonderful thing about them was that there were 2! So a friend could wear one with me! We would tie a string or belt around the bottom at the thighs and stuff them w/ pillows so we were big and round. It was great because there were 2 of us running (or buzzing) around a party. So much fun. The sad thing is that over the years of several moves in college, somehow they were lost. Still to this day, 15 years later I miss those costumes!
Thanks for entering me in your giveaway!
I always enjoy the silly costumes like "Static Cling" that take a little bit of thought to 'get'.
ReplyDeleteHow very cool of your mom. My favorite halloween costume was a ghost costume my mom put together using a dress hoop and a pillow case. I must have been like 4, and I was a very funny looking ghost. Thanks for the fun giveaway!
ReplyDeleteohh yummy lot of fabrics!!!! last year I make up tiger myself. it awesome!! I do it for my kids to do costume with them.. so fun!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite was helping a friend make a bunny costume for her daughter. It was mostly the time being together, but I didn't want to see another cotton ball for weeks.
ReplyDeleteMy sister was Alf when she was 3, but my favorite costume would have to be the milkmaid costume I halped my friend, Kim, make. Mostly just because of how much fun we had making it!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume was a beautiful Little House of the Prairie dress my mom made from calico when I was just a wee young girl. It had a matching bonnet to go with it. My younger sister also had a coordinating dress. They were works of art!
ReplyDeleteA favorite Halloween costume in this house (especially for my daughter) was the kimono I sewed for her, after she chose the fabrics. She was thrilled with the unique costume!

That's a wonderful prize!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume was actually an old wraparound silk dress that my grandmother lent me--with the long gloves and the little scrap of netting for my hair. Talk about playing dress-up! [I was eleven!]
My favourite Halloween costume was the one my mom made for me when I was in Grade 2. I was Little Bo Peep.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume was one my mum made for me when I was in primary school....it was made out of folded funny papers, and was a clown. It was so cute! I was really annoyed I didn't win the school contest!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume is a bright red Flapper dress that my Grandma made for me, it has tons of long red fringe! Thnks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteohhh... great scraps.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume... at least the one I remember the most as a kid was the year I went as a mummy. My mom and ripped two sheets into tons of 2" wide long strips and wrapped them all around me (over a pair of long johns). By the third house the whole thing was coming apart. All night long neighbors were bringing parts of my costume back to my house as they trick or treated. ;)
My sister and I laugh about pictures of us at Halloween in the late 60s, early 70's. One year she was a princess, and I was a witch. Another year she was Donald Duck and I was one of those creepy troll dolls. Do you see a pattern here??? My favorite is probably the year I was a rabbit and she was a dog. Both costumes had head coverings but we removed those and wore the costumes as pjs after the trick or treating. That makes me smile to think about it!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite halloween costume is a difficult choice. When my son was younger I took the opportunity to make a couple of his. One was Tweety Bird and the other was a frog. I loved them both! I am now waiting for my GD to get big enough for me to make a great one for her.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in first grade my mom's friend made me a cat costume from a pattern I picked out. Since my mother does not sew, it was the first time I realized that people could make clothing at home instead of buying it from a store! I'm sure that experience is part of what led me to start sewing myself. Also, I wore that cat costume around the house for almost a year!
ReplyDeleteOOOOhhh what a great question. Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday--I only had a short period between the ages of about 9 and 11 where I thought homemade costumes were lame, and thankfully rebelled against teenage pressures and started making fun costumes again. As a child I had wonderful costumes made by my grandmother, but my favorite is probably my Scarlett O'Hara dress. It was fashioned after the green and white picnic dress Scarlett wears near the beginning of the film. I think she made it from a bedsheet! My father made a hoop skirt from a hula-hoop to go under it. (my dad is so cool!) Ah! I am sighing just thinking about it :)
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I were dead ringers for Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne one year! Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeletesandyandcosmo@yahoo.com
Ah, I love Halloween! My birthday is Oct. 29th, so it always felt more like my day than anyone elses! In 6th grade, I was Cyndi Lauper ala "She-Bop" video. White hat and everything! I carried a boom box and played the song over and over. Good times. Fantastic prize, I am totally hoping I win this!
ReplyDeleteDifficult to choose!! Went thru a very iffy goth/rock chick stage in my teens and was also doing fashion and fabrics A-level. Mix the two together and you get a full-body high neck pvc bodysuit with matching corset and the next year i made a red rubber jumpsuit (very short!!) to go as a devil!! The first costume I ever remember my mum made and I went as the multi-coloured swap shop!! I was covered from head to toe in multi coloured crepe paper with random stuff stapled to it!! Gee thanks mum, no wonder I got a bit more adventurous in later years!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite costume was my mom made me a candy corn outfit when I was like 10. It was so cute and I always think about it! Also she made my son a furry dog costume last year. Everyone loved it.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite Halloween costume is my youngest princess dress. It's white - still white after three years of wearing. She looks just like a princess in it. And it fits like a glow - amazing.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite costume was a belly dancer in 6th grade. My mom sewed it, and I just loved the MC Hammer-ish pants she made!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite costume was a hedgehog for my son's first halloween! It was very basic but so cute and I thought he looked like such a big boy in it!
ReplyDeleteMy fave Halloween costume is Little Red Riding Hood. I have made the costume many times, for people all over the US and Canada, and I still love it. Thanks for the chance to enter your draw.
ReplyDeleteI love your giveaway fabric and supplies. The favorite costume I ever made was for my daughter. I bought some clothing at a thrift shop and dressed her as a hippy. She looked so great. I had to adjust all the items I bought. She got a lot of complements on her costume.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume was one I made with a big group of friends - we were a box of crayons and we all had personalized color names - I was "buxom blue" pretty racy for 10th grade :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume was a little red devil that I made for my son's 2nd Halloween. He was such a devil and so cute in it.
ReplyDeletelittlefamily1997@msn.com Thanks.
My favourite Halloween costume - a dragon. My aunt made it this year for a little girl who was simply adorable in it.
ReplyDeleteThis is an easy question! I loved the year I was a dalmatian. My mom made the costume by converting the bunny costume from the year before (fold down the ears, sew black spots on the white sweats, etc.). I love the fabric and hope I win!
ReplyDeletei went as a bunny and my bf went as a bear!
ReplyDeleteMy fave. Halloween costume ever was when I dresses up like a punk rocker. I sprayed my hair hot pink. I wore a crazy gold/red jacket, and some other crazy stuff....it was great.

My favorite costume was the tin man. I love wizard of oz and my favorite was the tin man when I was little and my mom made me a costume when I was 6 years old. I still have it in my closet.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite halloween costume that I wore was when my mom dressed me as Tinkerbelle. I loved it! This was about sixteen years ago. Makes me feel great that little girls still want to be Tinkerbelle!
ReplyDeleteI was Smurfette one year, way back, when the Smurfs were popular. It was a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteWhen my boys were tiny I sewed them all furry Ewok costumes (from Return of the Jedi/Star Wars). They were so adorable! We painted their noses black with make-up and they looked like three furry teddy bears. My favorite costumes EVER! leafygreenes at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteWe don't celebrate Halloween in Israel. Sorry for that..:) Please count me in! Thank you so much for your generosity! samjerus[at]yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteMy favorite halloween costume was movie related. I loved the movie "The Crow" and dressed up as the main character. I even found a raven to attach to my "pleather" trench. By the end of the evening, I was so hot and sweaty in pleather pants, I had to wash the make up off my face and change. But I still won the costume contest! :)
ReplyDeletewow great giveaway! & great question.... hmnmm when I was about 10 I made one of those board things that you put over your shoulders (you know, like advertisers wear? What are they called?) & it was a giant smiley face! LOL yes, it was the 70s
ReplyDeletewhat a great giveaway! I've been wanting to quilt more and these tools would be a great help! last year i dressed as the goat in robert rauschenberg's combine. no one got it.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite is one my brother had when we were little... A long tube of cardboard with the words 'toxic waste' in green!
ReplyDeleteI made my son a cookie monster costume, he was the cutest thing you every saw, definately my favorite.
ReplyDeleteMy fav halloween costume has to be my awesome Wizard costume I had when I was in elementary school - long before the Harry Potter craze. It was blue satin with gold and silver stars and planets on it. My mom and grandma made it for me with the big pointy hat and all!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume is the owl costume that I made for my daughter last year. This year we're staying with the bird theme, she wants to be a loon.
ReplyDeleteI was never allowed to have a real costume so I just put on my prettiest pink dress and tried to look like a princess ;) ( At that time Halloween wasn´t celebrated in Germany but Carneval)
ReplyDeleteTake care!
Tina
OOooo, that looks so neat. Do you leave instructions on how to hand quilt? I am very interested in learning! I would have to say my favorite was when I was a lady bug. black leotard and glitter-painted wings...ah, good times.
ReplyDeletemy favorite halloween costume was the fairy one my mom made for me. I had to be, like, 6 or 7 when she made it, but I wore that thing WAY too long. it was purple satin (or something like) with wings attatched, and they were made out of this pre-pleated, thin, lilac-colored fabric sewn around wire, so they always looked like wings. my dad made me a sparkley star wand and a crown to go with it...I know my mom made us other rad costumes that I wore forever, but that one was entirely and completely awesome. thanks mom & dad!
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous and generous giveaway!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween Costume? Well two years ago I made my brother a Pierrot costume from scratch. It turned out great. He won best costume at a party. :)
liesl52[at]gmail[dot]com
I'd really love to see a picture of the Patchwork Girl of Oz costume--I was obsessed with the Oz books when I was younger. Never dressed up as anything more interesting than Dorothy as far as Oz was concerned, though. I wanted silver shoes but my mom convinced me that ruby slippers would be more recognizable.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, favorite costume would probably have to be when I was in the first grade and me and my best friend dressed up as Chester and Wilson from the Kevin Henkes book Chester's Way. (My copy is actually signed "To Eleanor and Reuben, Reuben and Eleanor, that's the way it was.) Our little brothers dressed up as Kevin Henkes characters too (mine was Owen and his was Sheila Rae). Now what inspired this is that Kevin Henkes is a local author--at the time he only lived a few blocks away from us. So we stopped at his house towards the end of his route, and he thought we were the awesomest kids ever and we all now have copies of Chrysanthemum signed "You made my Halloween!"
My favorite Halloween costume was the "Dorothy" dress that I made for my oldest granddaughter a couple of years ago...she looked like she had just returned from OZ!
ReplyDeletewow, what a great giveaway!
ReplyDeletemy fav is last year when my son dressed up as teh superhero scrapey llewellyn ( a combinatino of a huge dinosaur claw and my meditation teacher). where he got that combo idea i have no idea!
Thanks
My favorite costume was one that I sewed myself. I am 5 feet tall, a woman with dark hair and I was Elvis...complete with porkchop sideburns. It was a gas.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was little, my favorite halloween costume was a gypsy. I loved getting to wear grandma's costume jewelry!
ReplyDeleteWow. I have made so many. Here's a doozy. I made a crocodile costume for my 2 year old nephew 16 years ago that was so heavy and hot he only wore it for about 5 minutes. I made it out some horrible (but not at the time)green acrylic they used to make for robes. This was before fleece was readily available. It was adorable, but what was I thinking!? It was so heavy he just kind of dragged around in it. We laugh about it now.
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting me enter.
Angie H.
Holy cow, that's an awesome prize pack! :D My favorite costume is my Alice in Wonderland costume.. nevermind that I still wear it, cuz it's a little sassy :D
ReplyDeleteA large orange pumpkin that I had the 'pleasure' to wear, such memories
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume thus far has to be the gypsy costume I wore last year. Just a hodge-podge of stuff from my closet, but everyone knew what I was going for. Comfortable AND warm enough to take my son trick-or-treating.
ReplyDeleteI have a fabulous black witch dress (a-la Wizard of Oz) but it needs some altering. That will probably be my favorite in coming years.
What a great giveaway. My favorite Halloween costume is one that I made for my son last year. He was Frodo and it turned out so great!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume has to be the one I made for my 3yr old. He was the cutest waddling teddy bear you have ever seen! lots of black fake fur with a big ol' white belly.
ReplyDeleteLove Halloween! I've made all of my kids' costumes and so far they've been pretty cool. Two years ago my then-4-year-old daughter was Annie and her 1-year old brother was her dog, Sandy. Last year my two-year-old son was He-Man, which was SO perfect and adorable!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the awesome giveaway!
My favourite Halloween costume is a frog costume (a fabric shirt and mask made out of some interesting green fabric). It belongs my dad, and was made for him by a friend of his when he was in his 20s so that a group of them could go to a costume party. I've borrowed it from him several times over the years.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume is the witch costume we made my daughter last year. She looks adorable in anything(No, I am not biased at ALL), but I loved her little costume!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume was clown costumes I made for my daughter and son. They were both just too cute.
ReplyDeleteAwesome giveaway! My daughter was a CareBear this last Halloween and I thought she was pretty cute!
ReplyDeletemy greatest halloween costume was being my childhood princess, lady lovely locks. Oh I thought she was the most beautiful thing ever, especially the creepy plastic princess face mask.
ReplyDeleteWhat a good idea for a giveaway, and a cute giveaway question to boot! My favorite costume was the friend who dressed all in black one year, with a hand mirror hanging around his neck. Whenever anyone would ask him who he was for Halloween, he'd hold up the mirror in front of his face and say "You!" Funny.

I've had really great costumes made by my mom. My favorite has to be the pumpkin costume that she made for me when I was pregnant. I was able to wear it 3 times -- she also made one for my husband and one for each of my kids. We've been a "pumpkin patch" for quite a few parties!
ReplyDeleteFavorite Halloween costume? The one that sticks out the most in my memory is when I was about ten I dressed up as an American Indian - my aunt had an entire suede outfit for some reason. Headband, skirt, vest - I had it all!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great giveaway!
My favorite costumes are the ones I made for my kids last year. When I was pregnant, I knew that I would do Pebbles and Bamm Bamm for Halloween. So I couldn't wait for it to roll around! I even did a hairbow with a dog bone and my son loved carrying the club! It was fantastic!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite costume was a mermaid costume that I made based on an evening gown pattern. It had a white eyelash top with a starfish at the bust and teal satin skirt. I also had a tiara with sea shells. I'd be wearing that costume to this day except that my sister let a friend borrow it (without my permission) and then never got it back. Grr.
ReplyDeleteGREAT giveaway. My favorite costume was a huge fish costume I sewed for my oldest son (later worn by my younger one also). Man was that thing a pain to sew, but it came out so cute!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume was a Color Brite Sprite costume I made for my daughter. I love your give away items.
ReplyDeleteMy fav right now is the medieval costume I made for myself last year. From long ago, my favorite was when my best friend and I were a pair of dice. We wore black bowler hats for the top "one" pip where our heads stuck out.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was 18, my boyfriend wanted to be a bear. I bought a pattern that consisted of a 1 piece ankle-to-wrist-to-neck bodysuit, a hood and shoe covers. After making his bear suit, I decided to use the same pattern and made a matching dinosaur suit for myself by adding a HUGE tail and spikes down the hood and back. We went out to dinner at Applebees.
ReplyDeleteAbout 6 months later, we went back to Applebees and the waiter said "Hey look, it's the dinosaur and the bear!" Part of me wanted to die on the spot and part of me was so giddily proud.
We've worn those costumes for the last 3 years for costume parties and Halloween and they're always a hit.
Cool question! Year before last the fmaily decided to dress up like the characters from the PBS cartoon "Word Girl." Daughter was Word Girl (with a Captain Huggyface), son was Dr. Two Brains, hubby was The Butcher and I was... Grannie Mae. Not glamorous, but we ALL looked great!! Now if only people knew the show.......
ReplyDeletethe year i went as a zombie was great fun. thanks for your generosity!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume was probably being a bag of Jelly Belly jelly beans. Very fun. I stuffed a clear garbage bag with small colorful balloons and wore it as a shirt!
ReplyDeleteBack when I was in high school, I went as a gypsy moth. Full skirt, lots of scarves and jewelry, and cardboard wings with ostrich feathers for antennae. A few people actually even figured it out, somewhat to my surprise...
ReplyDeleteI made a scarecrow costume for my son when we was 2 and it was adorable. One of the cutest costumes I've seen, and certainly the cutest I've made, and I didn't even get any pictures of it.
ReplyDeleteI think my favorite costume was the year I went as a 6 sided die. Although my all time favorite costume was not one I wore or helped make. My friend Lisa went as a bunch of grapes by taping purple balloons all over herself. By the end of the evening she was a half eaten bunch of grapes.
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway! My favorite Halloween costume has to be when my oldest son was just 1 year old...very simple little ghost costume. He is just turned 36!! How time flies. LindaW
ReplyDeleteI have a vintage sheet just like that! So cute! Anyway, my fav halloween costume--probably the genie costume my mom made. She always went all out for us. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume.. that is tough I make my little family do group costumes until they are old enough to rebel. This last year I sewed my 4 year old a bow tie and apron (hot dog vendor) with some fabric scraps and made my 2 week old into a into a hot dog.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume was a lady bug
ReplyDeleteMy favorite costume, by far, was the 'Pioneer Girl' costume my Grammy made for me from an old dress of my mother's. It had a coordinating apron and elastic cap, and reminded me so much of Kirsten--American Girl. I was VERY into the American Girls and historical fiction. Anywho!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the offer!!
My favorite costume, while not very original, was probably when I dressed up as a mummy. Would have been fairly straightforward, had I not unraveled gradually throughout the night (but that was part of the fun). :) I also had a butterfly costume that I really liked, complete with wings that my mother had rigged up somehow, but most people thought I was a fairy (which would have been okay too)> Thanks for the great giveaway!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume? Yikes. That's a tough one. My mother is the master of the Halloween costume. She makes wings from metal coat hangers and hairnets, insect bodies and tree tops from garbage bags stuffed full of news paper. We had a graduation robe that was used nearly every year as well.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a tie between:
1. Crayons-I was carnation pink and my brother was periwinkle blue. Made from crepe paper and construction paper.
2. Oak tree. Brother and I wore brown corduroys with green trash bags stuffed on top. The whole family spent days cutting out oak leaves from fall colored construction paper.
I think it might have been my Ninja costume. I was such a tomboy!
ReplyDeleteI wrapped myself in toilet paper and went out as a mummy. The only problem is that I caught fire at a party. Try putting out a fire when your hands are also wrapped in paper. The only reason I can laugh about it now is that I was not hurt.
ReplyDeleteAwesome giveaway!! I love your site. Thanks for sharing. My favorite halloween costume was a witch outfit my Mom made me in fifth grade. She sewed a lot of love into it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great package. My favorite costume was Dorothy from Wizard of Oz. the red glitter shoes were the absolute best! I wish I still had them. :-)
ReplyDeleteloist0607@yahoo.com
I put together a Wonder Woman outfit (as an adult) that was pretty rockin...ah, the thighs of a woman two babies ago :) Lovely giveaway!
ReplyDeletemy favorite halloween costume EVER was the quasi She-Ra one my mom made for me when i was really little. man that thing rocked!!
ReplyDeleteOne year, I helped my SIL make a "Cousin It" (from the Adams Family) costume for my niece. It was very labor intensive (I guess that's why she had me help) with yards and yards of twine for the hair. It turned out very cool.
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt kit, by the way!
My favorite costume was going as a "Greek lady" in a--what's it called? chiton I think--anyway the long flowing tunic thingy they wore.
ReplyDeleteparknj at verizon dot net
fave halloween costume: pippi long stocking!
ReplyDeletelove love love!! your site...and great giveaway! thanks for the chance to win <3
My favorite Halloween costume as a kid was a two-headed monster. I went with a friend, and my mom sewed us up a joint costume (two sweatshirts sewn together with one arm cut off each so we made one massive body), crazy hair, antennae and make-up.
ReplyDeleteSo fun to read these comments, and thanks for the giveaway!
The 80's Madonna look, was interesting.
ReplyDeleteWith the holes in the tops and hanging off one shoulder tops.
This has to do with 'not perfection' in the sewing industry. That's my style, because I am still new at sewing.
Thanks!

I live in a traditional Chinese family, I have never participate in any Halloween party. However, if I'm going to make one for my girl, it will be a pumpkin, I'm sure she will look great in it, so cute!
ReplyDeleteI made a little gray mouse costume for my daughter when she was about 2 years old.
ReplyDeletembabecka@hotmail.com
that is too funny that you say that.. ok. my favorite costume is the one I am planning to make this year for my one year old!! She's going to be Boo from Monsters inc. I can't wait to make it. P.s. love betz white.
ReplyDelete:)
what a cool idea! We didn't celebrate halloween most of my growing up, so I can't really answer. We did buy our son a fireman costume that he wears and it is oh-so-cute! Check out my giveaway too at seemommysew.wordpress.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter dressed as an angel one year, and I made the wings out of poster board. Those wings made it through 2 other children :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway.
I made a little red riding hood with a red courderoy cape for my 3 yr old last Halloween and it was awesome (if I do say so myself!!)
ReplyDeleteWhile it wasn't my *fave*, my most memorable was a mouse costume that my mom had handmade by a friend when I was 7. It was hideous but she loved it and that makes me smile!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite costume EVER was when I went as a "Jelly Belly." I wore a large plastic trash bag, filled with small balloons. It was rather cute, but not very easy to sit down in.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you remember Gem and the Rockers but I was totally her! I didn't have my ears pierced though so my mom made "earrings" out of cardboard, tin foil and looped them around my ears with yarn...talk about ingenuity.

I love your question! I knew the answer instantly. When I was about 8 or 9 my best friend and I dressed up as little piggies (costumes made by our crafty moms, of course!). About 5 years later while we were well into our adolescence my best friend and I had a sleepover and decided to try on our old costumes! We barely squeezed them on and had such a fun time pretending we were 8 again! Needless to say, that was one of my favorite memories with my best friend!
ReplyDeletemy fav Halloween costume was one that my mom and grandmother made for me when I was about 3. It was witchy and black and had a screeching little furry kitty appliqued onto the dress. I loved it!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I am SOOO excited right now!! If you don't believe me, ask my cat- she's sitting on my lap and I just let out a squeal. She is looking not-too-impressed now!
ReplyDeleteDo you want to know why I'm so excited? Because the very next projec ton the list of things I want to learn is...
QUILTING!
And what better way to get a kick up the bum to get onto that project than by winning this crazily exciting giveaway! Squeal!!
Ok, I must calm down now. At least enough to tell you about Halloween. Well, you may not know this, but Halloween isn't really celebrated in Australia. :-( This made me super-sad when I was a kidd-o, because I'd read all these wonderful American books about fun Halloween times and never get to experience it myself. So, when I was 16, I got dressed up as a little devil and went trick-or-treating in my neighbourhood. Poor neighbours! They had NO idea what I was doing, or why I was at their door, or what in the world my little devil costume and I wanted! So, that year, I made a vow that I would spend Halloween in the States one year. In 2007, I made that dream come true! I flew over there a few days before the 31st, and spent the next week hunting down costumes with some friends and planning The Big Night. I was a glittering purple witch, complete with pumpkin handbag! My favourite costume was my partner Sharon's, though- she got dressed up as Dracula and was so real in it that I couldn't recognise her face under all the make-up.
Anyway, if you've made it to the end of this VERY long essay, congratulations! The point is, I hope I win :-) It would be the most inspiring and encouraging start to my quilting career!! xxx Sandra

Undoubtedly when I was Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz in 1st grade. We tacky glued red sequins on my shoes...I tracked sequins all over my school...it was sparkly for weeks.

I had most fun teh year I went as Major Anthony Nelson and my friend Sue went as I Dream of Genie.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume was went I went as a flower in a pot. I got one of those giant plastic flower pots and sawed the bottom off. Then, I drilled holes in it so I could create straps to go over my shoulders so I could wear it. I cut the dish the pot sits in in half and made straps for my feet. I wore brown tights, a green turtleneck and made a daisy cutout that my face went through for the flower. Then I painted my face as a happy daisy center! I know, nuts.
ReplyDeleteCome to think of it, I've got another couple of crazy costumes but you only asked for one! ;-) (I'll just tease you with this--two-headed purple spotted dragon.)
We don't celebrate halloween in France. But the favorite costume i ever wore was a dotty clown. I was coered in colorful dot, face and hands included.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was younger, my mom dressed me up like a (kid-friendly) Modonna. I was just looking at the picture the other day, and it made me laugh out loud! Thanks for the generous giveaway, I am wanting to try my hand at quilting, so this would be perfect!
ReplyDeleteYehuim@aol.com
My mom had this long hooded wool coat with fur around the hood and igloo, polar bear and eskimo appliques on it. I went as an eskimo of course and was very warm all night.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite Halloween costume was a Barbie cheerleader costume. I don't know whether it was the costume itself or the fond memory of having a trim body (but not as trim as Barbie's) to put into it. Thank you for your lovely blog.
ReplyDelete"What was your favorite Halloween costume?"
ReplyDeleteit was an R.O.U.S costume i made for my then 6mo. old here's a link http://sharon-c-thats-me.blogspot.com/2007/10/rous.html it was super cute, and she looked super cute... um, this was me preacticing my sewing skills. i want to get into quilting, but i'm nervous it might be too... frustrating? i just don't really know where to start. but i wanna:) ps i love your patterns and tutorials, i'm glad i discovered your blog!
By far, reading about everyone's favorite costumes has been the best part of my day! And to get a chance to win that fantastic prize?! Best day ever! lol!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite costume was when I was 3 and I insisted that I had to go as Princess Leia. My mom made me the costume and the "cinnamon buns" hairpiece. All of my great-aunties and great-uncles had no clue what I was when she took me trick-or-treating, one guessed that I was a nun! ;D Made for some awesome pictures...
my favorite costume was actually from last year. i was a "crazy cat lady" with ruffled hair, pjs, and a robe (super cosy, right?) then i stitched up little kitties and pinned them all over my clothes, (even tied one to a bow on the top of my head) so i was just covered in a bazillion cats. i have to say, you cannot beat wearing pjs as a costume! and i reused the kitties at cat toys (ha!) for my own real life cat. (not to worry, i only have the one, not bazillions!) ;p
ReplyDeletethanks for the chance!

My son and daughter were pirates last year. They were so proud to match and it was fun to put them together. THanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeletei think that Dorothy is a classic. It's not to hard to put together and you get to wear cute red shoes :)
ReplyDeleteHalloween isn't a popular holiday here in Australia and the thought didn't even cross my mind last year that I would even get door knockers.
ReplyDeleteHowever at about 6pm there was a knock on the door and there was the little 5 year old boy from across the road decked out in a roll of toilet paper dressed as a Mummy! It was totally gorgeous and the best costume I've ever seen here in Oz ;-)
Favorite H costume: Carrie from the Stephen King novel. Soooo much fun tearing up my old formal and running around like a crazy person.
ReplyDeleteScrap quilts are my favorite favorite favorite projects - your fabric choices are rocking my world right now! Thanks for the chance to win!
We don't have Hallowean in Australia but I had a rockin 5th dress up birthday where I went as a gypsy - it was full of folky goodness!
ReplyDeleteOh I love Halloween so I have a number of costumes to choose from but I think my all time fave was my best friend and I going as Sigfried and Roy. We had wigs, five o'clock shadow, leopard print vest with our names and a picture of a tiger head in sequins on the back...honestly it was amazing and I have never felt so in character!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing
xo
I remember seeing some one dressed up like Tim Burtons the corpse bride, and she looked fantastic!
ReplyDelete:)
My favourite costume ever was Princess Leia not because what I was wearing, but because a friend of mine came dressed as Yoda. He looked amazing! I don't think I have ever laughed so much in my life!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great giveaway! My favorite halloween costume, is hard to choose...my mom was always amazing, making each of us intricate halloween costumes when my siblings and I were younger. One year my sister and I had matching Princess Jasmine costumes, mine was pink and hers was blue. They were pretty fun, they had the jeweled (a large button) headband and the baggy pants and gathered bikini type top.
ReplyDeleteNot a big holiday here in Australia. Not a real fan myself either - do I have to pick one?
ReplyDeletewow. this is such a generous giveaway =) =). and coincidentally, i have been wanting to try out sewing my first quilt. but there is always the fear of trying something new when i'm such a newbie at using the sewing machine. ;)
ReplyDeletefave costume: my red riding hood costume. i had the basket + gingham apron + hoodie going on. =D
My favorite Halloween costume was when I was about 13 years old. I took a large box and made it look like a box of Crest toothpaste. It looked pretty realistic! The box was hard to walk in, especially on steps since it came past my knees, but I loved that costume!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite halloween costumes were this past year when my five children were characters from the wizard of oz!
ReplyDeleteWe had Glinda, The wicked witch, Tin man, scarecrow, and a little dorothy!
My favorite costume was when my little sister dressed out as that character of the Scream movie with the white mask. It was fun.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot!
My favorite costume is going as the great pumpkin from the Charlie Browm cartoon. thanks for such a great giveaway.
ReplyDelete
